‘Ishqiya' is captivating

Director: Abhishek Chaubey

Starring: Naseeruddin Shah , Arshad Warsi , Vidya Balan

OyeG Review

Trust filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj to serve you anything but run-of-the-mill. ‘Ishqiya’ is not just a love story, it is a spicy drama-thriller that will keep you hooked from start to end.

Khalujan (Naseer) and Babban (Arshad) are partners in crime who take shelter in Krishna’s (Vidya Balan) home to escape a gangster. Krishna, a mysterious woman is femme fatale and both Khalu and Babbar lose their heart to her. Khalu dreams of Krishna with his tinted vision of old-fashioned love, while Babban lustfully desires her. The two are in for a rude shock when she holds the gun against them. Is she what she appears to be? Only the climax will tell.

Direction

A pat on debutant director Abhishek Chaubey’s back for extracting convincing performances from the stellar starcast and for fresh and meaningful direction that takes the cinematic experience to a totally different level. The 20-something director has handled the film with a veteran’s expertise. There are enough twists and turns in this unusual tale of crime and romance to keep you glued to your seat, and the unpredictable climax is the icing on the cake.

Story/Screenplay/Dialogues/Music

Vishal Bhardwaj scores big time in the writing department and his effective dialogue brings each character alive on screen. Set in a rural landscape, Ishqiya explores basic human emotions as influenced by love, desire, greed and revenge that are beautifully portrayed on screen with a tinge of mystery, thrill, realism and suspense. The music maestro turned filmmaker can still weave magic with his tuneful music. The song ‘Dil Toh Bachcha hai ji’ and ‘Badi dheere jail raina’ are marvelous compositions.

Performances

Brilliant will be an understatement for Naseeruddin Shah’s performance. Arshad Warsi is good and well into the character. Vidya Balan is a natural in front of the camera and moulds her act according to the character effortlessly. Other actors in small roles add to the film’s effect, especially a teenager Nandu who says his age is ‘paanch kam bees’. The fine performances of the lead actors will prove to be the USP of the film.

OyeG Verdict

Go watch ‘Ishqiya' for a hatke cinematic experience. The romance-crime-thriller will leave you awe-struck. A welcome change from Bollywood formula films!
