Vishal-Shriya's long waited 'Thoranai' finally has showed up at Kollywood. The story is a popular theme in indian cinemas where two siblings get lost, and reunion takes place either through a family song, birthmarks, and family traits but added with more glam and colour quotient.
Geetha has two sons, one of the sibling gets into wrong activity and runs away from the family. The second brother comes in search of his long lost brother and how if he finds him is the crux of the movie.
Younger brother Vishal comes to city in search of his elder brother where he gets into trouble with two local dons. Situations plays that Vishal is caught between the two. His association with Lal, an honest police officer, helps him to set things right and he accidentally discovers his lost brother. Prakash Raj and Kishore play the local don and Shriya Saran plays his ladylove.
The director has made a track for both comedy and romance which does not merge with the main plot. The comedy track is meticulously handled well by Santhanam, Paravai Muniamma and Mayilsammy. Romance track is maintained glamourously by Shriya, but apart from appearing in duet songs and skimpy clothes her role has no major part to play in the movie.
The director has attempted to give a light commercial coat to the main plot, the movie inlarge is lacking connectivity between the main plot and side tracks. Vishal's role as a comedian which was talked much has not impact and the song sequences has no connection with the theme. Shriya and Vishal do not share any chemistry. The key scene where Vishal finds his brother should have been better as it forms the crux of the movie.
Vishal has not been given any opportunity to explore his acting skills, nor does he excels in comedy scenes. Bhaskar who appears as a assistant to Prakash Raj makes few scenes interesting. Music by Mani Sharma is good especially the one 'Pattucha' and 'Vaa Chellam'. Stunt scenes are usual as seen in any Vishal's movie. Priyan's camera work is evident in stunt sequences and songs picturisation.
Overall, the movie is set to capture few commercial and technical elements to a story that all Indian cinema audience is familiar with for years. 'Thoranai' is a typical masala film, a family entertainer.
