A political drama set in Rajasthan, Gulaal runs into the flashback mode. Dilip Singh (Raj Singh Chaudhary) seeks admission in a Rajasthan college. He unwillingly enters into politics due to circumstances. The film is full of mostly grey characters who are directly or indirectly involved in the web of Rajasthan politics.
Direction
Anurag Kashyap, Raj Chaudhary and Aparna Chaturvedi should be credited for sketching out a very well scripted film which is the actually the hero of the film. So much so, that even the item numbers move the story ahead. Piyush Mishra has given some thoughtful lyrics, keeping in mind the way in which the film is heading. The cinematography by Rajeev Ravi is excellent which gives the Rajasthan feel. The variety of camera angles coupled with the pleasing background music adds to the intensity of the film. However, the intensity gets a bit too much to handle at times.
Performances
Gulaal is full of superlative performances. Just when you think that Kay Kay Menon has reached the peak of his acting level, he proves you wrong and comes up with a better performance. The sheer intensity of his acting can be seen from the very first seen when he addresses a gathering. Piyush Mishra who is the singer, music composer and lyricist also, acts well. Deepak Dobriyal impresses yet again. Mahie Gill’s interesting and funny cameo provides the much needed lighter moments. Aditya Shrivastav is good. Jessy Randhawa is decent. Abhimanyu Shekhar Singh is brilliant.
OyeG Verdict
Gulaal will definitely add ‘colour’ to your cine going experience. Inspite of being a dark and intense film, it is surely a must watch for its intense drama and strong performances.
